Handy Serving Size Guide

We may want to eat a healthy balanced diet. But what does a serving size actually look like? If you’re unsure, read this hand-y (sorry for the pun!) guide.

Ever been away from home and wondered how many servings are in the meal you are eating? If you don’t carry a set of scales, it can be difficult to make an accurate estimate.

Look no further than your hand. It can help you better estimate a variety of foods.

A palm (see circle labelled 1) equals a serving of meat, fish or poultry. It comprises the palm of your hand without your fingers or thumb.

A thumb (see circle labelled 2) equals 25 g of most cheeses. Depending on which food guide you follow, 2 thumbs is generally equal to a serving.

A thumb-tip (see circle labelled 3) equals a teaspoon. Three thumb-tips equal a tablespoon. So, it would take approximately 50 thumb-tips to equal a serving of milk.

A fist (not shown) equals a cup. When you close your fingers, your hand represents approximately one cup. A fist size of raw leafy greens would be a serving of lettuce.

Two fists together (not shown) consisting of your hands in a fist with your knuckles touching (and not including beyond your wrists). This amount is approximately the size of your stomach and handily enough the correct portion size.

We don’t claim that this is a totally accurate guide. But if you need to make an estimate, your hand could be a real helping hand. (Sorry!)

*Disclaimer: We will not be held responsible for how perfectly your hand corresponds to the precise measurement. In other words, this is a bit of fun and a good estimate only so please don’t sue us if it is not completely accurate.

Neat trick. I’ve often wondered what I could do when I was out.
