The latest cleanses touted as energizing, slimming and more satisfying. No longer advertised as weight loss programs, these new detox diets move beyond the old way of detoxing – whereby dieters adhere to an all liquid diet.
Older detox diets, like the “Master Cleanse” – which Beyoncé was rumored to be on – tend to offer minimal nutrition and rapid weight loss. Today’s newer detox diets – or cleanses as they tend to be known – claim to rebalance the body, purify the liver and regulate the digestive tract’s PH balance. Losing weight is an added benefit.
An interesting article published in Allure in October 2008 further examines these new detox diets. The article compares the old way of detoxing whereby dieters adhere to an all liquid diet against these new cleanses.
The regimens vary widely in duration and strictness. Some last just one day, whereas others stretch on for weeks. The most stringent are essentially flavored water; others offer vegetable and fruit juices; and Winfrey’s plan, based on “Quantum Wellness” (Weinstein Books) by Kathy Freston, included real meals dominated by organic produce and whole grains.
But “this really isn’t an exercise in starvation,” Niemerow says. “A cleanse pulls you out of your daily routine and is an opportunity to consciously look at what you’re consuming” — and to notice how it feels “when you take away all the foods that cause havoc on your body.”

Scientists are investigating preliminary evidence that certain foods, such as Chlorophyll, have anti-cancer properties. So it is too soon to know for sure if these diets offer all they claim. But juice can be part of your daily recommended servings of fruit and vegetables.
Juice extracts all the vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables so you still get all the nutrients. Although other elements such as the fiber is eliminated. Fiber, has significant health benefits such as regulating blood-sugar levels. And the jury is still out about whether your body needs to detox.
For those who cannot find the time to diet, one benefit of juice is the ability to consume the equivalent portion of vegetables in a few minutes. It also eliminates the time needed to eat three meals a day, decide what to eat and figure out if you have included all your fruit and vegetable servings.
